Cystic Fibrosis

Favorite Game: Fortnite

Carter is 12 years old, from Augusta, Maine, and he LOVES playing video games. Carter also happens to be a frequent BBCH patient, along with his little sister, because they both have cystic fibrosis (CF).

On a good day, in addition to many medications, Carter needs 2 treatments with his percussive vest and nebulizer to help him breathe and to keep his lungs healthy. When he’s sick, that number goes up, and Carter might have to do 4 treatments each day. Carter often plays video games during treatment, to help pass the time.

Patients with Cystic Fibrosis can’t play together in real life (except siblings) because they carry bacteria within their lungs that could be harmful to each other. Gaming breaks down that barrier and allows CF patients to play games together virtually. Carter had the opportunity to play on the same Fortnite team with another CF patient, Bryce, for our TSM Diego event! Let’s gooooooo!

Carter is Play with a Pro’s original Superstar and has had the chance to play with Activater and TSM Diego, while raising money for BBCH! He is an active member of the team and is currently working on our Minecraft build for our March, 28, 2020 event in Portland, Maine! Not only, is he a part of our build team, but he will also be co-hosting the event with our Pro ESports Shoutcaster and Host, Slevn.

The founder of PWAP met Carter when she made a Fortnite cake for him through Icing Smiles, as a Sugar Angel. They instantly clicked and have been raising money together, ever since. We are so excited to have Carter as a member of our team and are looking forward to doing more events with him!

Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome

Favorite Game: Minecraft

12-year old Brayden is a huge Minecraft fan!  He spent years without answers before being referred to a geneticist at BBCH. “Suddenly 8 years of illness and injuries came into focus and made sense,” his mom explains, “The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital… changed the trajectory of Brayden’s life.”

Diagnosed with Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that causes his body to make faulty collagen, Brayden is determined to conquer his illness. His mom shares that Brayden has to work incredibly hard for things people normally take for granted- like eating a bowl of cereal. “It took 9 months of OT and Speech to be able for him to develop the motor planning, strength, dexterity and sensory tolerance.

Brayden couldn’t lift the milk and pour it because his shoulders or elbow would pop out. He couldn’t hold the spoon without his fingers popping out. He didn’t have the muscle strength or eye hand coordination because of his eye teaming issues to be able to get that spoon from his bowl to his mouth without spilling it… I can remember the day that he finally was able to be successful… He cried ‘I did it! I did it!’”

Brayden joined the Fortnite team with Carter and Bryce to play with TSM and Diego in November 2019!  He is also a member of our March 2020 Play with a Pro LIVE! Minecraft build team. We are honored to have Brayden as a part of the team and look forward to hanging out with him more.

Likes: Gaming, Legos, Minecraft, anything ‪How To Train Your Dragon‬ and creating his own characters out of craft supplies like pipe cleaners, hot glue and such.

Update: Brayden has been selected as the 2020 Champion for BBCH! We’re so proud of you- keep up the great work!  Check it out!
